‘Facebook Fatigue’? February 1, 2008

I think it’s clear form here that I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with social networking sites.

I do enjoy playing about with them when I first join, then I start to get annoyed over various things (flashing graphics, anyone?! lol).

I like linking up with people I know, re-discovering old friends, and even sometimes making new ones.. then I get annoyed because strange people want to be my ‘friend’, and I have no idea who they are!

And so on..

But, the main problem with them is that I simply get bored of them. I used to leave comments for friends, but now I find it easier to send emails - I’m writing to them because I have something I want to say to them, not because I want to get involved in a ‘popularity contest’. Etc..

It seems as if others feel the same, according to this article.

So how about you, are you still caught up in the ‘craze’, are you feeling the boredom, or did you stay well clear in the first place?

Geez, I am SO behind on the times. I’ve never checked out the sites at all. If only there were more hours in a day! ;-)

I have to streamline my online time: marketing efforts and a few choice friends. :)

I totally agree with you. I closed my Facebook account as I was so sick of getting requests to add things to my page when I had neither the time or inclination to do so. I had only joined because I received an invite from an old college buddy (with whom I was already still in contact by letter anyway). I’m on Bebo, but I haven’t updated the page in AGES as I tend to email friends and call family, so there’s little, if any, point in doing so on Bebo.

Like you, I get heartily sick of complete strangers trying to hook up (especially the dodgy men who declare their undying love for you even though they don’t know you at all and just want to add you to their social network “harem”).

I’ve never had a My Space becaue I hate the layout, but I do (as you know) have a blog, which I much prefer (even though I don’t update it all that often) as it’s more on my own terms than any social network site.

As for Friends Reunited, I have refused to renew my membership for 4 years now, as paying £7.50 a year for a site I no longer visit seems absolutely pointless.

I’ll love the day that social netowrk sites die out from lack of use and interest.

I just check in with my MySpace and Facebook accounts to see if anyone sent me an actual message. When I get those “Bunny” and “Hug” requests, I just ignore them. It’s annoying, but I have friends who I can only really keep in touch with on these sites. I don’t update my own pages often, though.
