Uh Oh… February 7, 2008

I’ve just had a phone call from the vet, to say that he does have lots of crystals in his urine sample! :( Poor little guy!
So, now we’re facing 6 weeks of a special diet. The vet has ordered a 5kg bag of dry food, which is going to cost another £38! (After the phone call, I realised I probably should have gone for the smaller bag, in case he needs to switch to the wet food… my decision making isn’t that good under pressure!) After 6 weeks they will re-test. I’m sure we’re facing a long term change in his diet though.. that’ll be fun with two cats!
Sigh!
Ouch Micha! One of my ex-cats, which my neighbour adopted, had the same thing happen to him!
At least now you know what’s wrong with him and can treat it, which must be a relief to both you and the poor kitty! Hope he’s feeling better soon and glad it’s nothing more serious!
Poor kitty! At least he’ll get some relief soon.
What are crystals and why and how do cats get them?
Ohhh, poor thing! Hope he feels better soon.
Thanks everyone.. I’m just off to the vets, to pick up his special food.
Steph, they’re really small stones that form in the urine. Apparently they just form in certain cats.. the special food makes their urine very slightly acidic, and also reduces the magnesium, which is a cause.
Although it’s probably very uncomfortable for all cats, the worry in males is that the stones can completely block their urethra.
I hope Louis starts feeling better soon!
UGH! Sorry Michelle. Hope the little cat feels better soon.
Hello, clicked to your site, having read the message about your cat over on DGR. If you find that you have to switch to the special biscuits, permanently, then do have a good search on the internet for alternative suppliers. We were paying incredible prices for ‘teeth and gum’ biscuits in small bags from our vet, until my partner found a local company who not only supplied them at a fraction of the cost, but also delivered free if we bought in bulk. Hope he’s feeling better soon.
Thank you Carole.. I’ve already been exploring that option. I discovered last night that even the prescription stuff is available cheaper online!
